It tends to get filed under one of two headings: a legal box to tick, or a nice thing to do for a small group of unfortunate people. Both framings are wrong, and both lead to the same place — accessibility done late, grudgingly, as an afterthought bolted on at the end, if it happens at all.

Here is a more useful way to see it. Accessible design is simply design that works for more people. It is not charity. It is reach.

It is not a small group

The first myth to drop is that this is about a tiny minority. A significant share of people have some disability affecting how they use technology — vision, hearing, motor control, attention, memory. That alone is a large market. But the framing undersells it further, because accessible design helps far more than people with permanent disabilities.

Captions help the person in a noisy cafe and the one in a silent office. Good contrast helps anyone outdoors in bright sun. Large touch targets help a person with a tremor and a person on a train. Clear, simple language helps a non-native speaker and an expert in a hurry. Design for the edges and the middle benefits too. The “small group” is, in practice, almost everyone, some of the time.

Excluding people is a choice with a cost

When a product is inaccessible, it is not neutral. It is actively turning people away: customers who cannot complete the purchase, users who give up and go to a competitor who made it possible. That is revenue walking out of the door, quietly, with no complaint attached, because people rarely write in to say “I couldn’t use your site, so I left.” They just leave. The cost is invisible, which is the only reason it gets tolerated.

It is cheaper than you fear, if you start early

Part of the resistance is a belief that accessibility is expensive and hard. It is, if you leave it to the end and retrofit it onto something that ignored it. It is remarkably cheap if it is simply part of how you build from the start — sensible contrast, proper labels, keyboard support, clear language, things that take little extra effort when they are baked in and a painful rebuild when they are not. The expense is not accessibility. The expense is doing it last.

Reframe it and it gets done

The teams that do accessibility well are usually the ones who stopped thinking of it as accessibility at all. They think of it as quality, as reach, as not throwing away customers for no reason. Once it is framed as “design that works for more people” rather than “a special accommodation,” it stops being the thing you cut when time is short and becomes the thing you would not dream of shipping without.

It is not charity.
