A page that loads before you have had a chance to wonder whether it will. A form that remembers what you typed when your connection dropped. None of this makes a good demo. All of it makes a tool you trust.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Trust is the whole game. People do not adopt software because it is clever; they adopt it because they stop having to think about it. The moment a tool surprises you, even pleasantly, it has taken a little attention you did not want to spend.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>The dazzle tax\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Every bit of flourish has a cost, and the person who pays it is rarely the person who added it. A gratuitous animation costs a frame of jank on an older phone. A “delightful” custom dropdown costs a keyboard user the thing the native one gave them for free. A novel layout costs a returning user the muscle memory they had built.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>I am not arguing for ugly. I am arguing that polish should be spent on the things people do a hundred times a day, not the things they see once. A month after launch, does anyone mention the feature you were most proud of? Usually not. What they mention is that the thing they dreaded now takes ten seconds. That is the work.
