The unsubscribe link buried three menus deep. The pre-ticked box that signed you up for something. The “No thanks, I don’t want to save money” you have to click to decline. The cancel flow designed like an obstacle course. These are dark patterns: design that nudges people into doing things they did not really mean to do. And they work, which is exactly the problem.

Why they spread

Dark patterns persist for the simplest of reasons: in the short term, they hit the numbers. The pre-ticked box lifts sign-ups. The awkward cancel flow reduces churn this quarter. The buried opt-out keeps more people in the list. If you only look at the metric the trick was designed to move, it looks like a win, and someone gets a pat on the back for it.

The cost does not show up in that metric. It shows up somewhere quieter and far more expensive.

The bill comes due in trust

Every dark pattern is a small con, and people are better at detecting cons than designers like to believe. They may not articulate it. They will just come away with a faint sense that they were handled — that this company is the kind that will try it on. That feeling accumulates. It is why people cancel the moment they get the chance, refuse to recommend you, and assume the worst about your next move.

Trust is the thing every business actually runs on, and it is brutally asymmetric: slow to build, fast to lose, and almost impossible to win back once someone has decided you are not on their side. Dark patterns spend that trust to juice a short-term number. It is one of the worst trades in business, because you are selling the durable thing to rent the disposable one.

The opposite is a strategy

The alternative is not just more ethical, it is better business over any horizon longer than a quarter. Make the unsubscribe obvious. Make cancelling as easy as signing up. Leave the box unticked and let people choose. Each of these costs you a little on some dashboard today and earns you something far more valuable: a customer who believes you are straight with them.

People reward being treated like adults. They stay longer with companies that make leaving easy, because the ease tells them they were never trapped, only choosing to stay. That is a far stronger position than any retention trick will ever buy you.

The simple test

If you want to know whether a design choice is a dark pattern, ask one question: if you explained it plainly to the user, to their face, would they feel respected or played? “We pre-ticked this because most people want it and you can untick it” is fine. “We pre-ticked this because we knew you probably would not notice” is not. You already know which of your own choices fail that test. Fix those.
